What does it mean to see SSL Warning on VPS Server?

One of the popular occurrences that users generally see is the warning when a user tries to logon to WHM or cPanel on VPS hosting. The warning reads something like this “Your Connection is Not Private” and the attackers may siphon off information. Once you see such information, there are two important questions associated and they are:

i.What does this warning mean?
ii. What can a person do once he or she sees such a warning? What are the possible actions one can take?

This is where the concept of Self-Signed SSL Certificate comes into existence. Working of self-signed SSL are significantly similar to normal SSL certificate. In case of the normal SSL certificate, they are certified by 3rd party certificate authority, confirming whose server it is. Main advantage of such a certificate is that it helps visitors to successfully get connected to a website or server through an encrypted connection. The only difference in case of a self certified SSL certificate is that the certification is issued by the server itself for serving encrypted HTTPS access to visitors. There is no 3rd party involved in verifying whether a certain server is safe for visiting. Browser of a visitor to a certain server, certified by Self-Signed SSL Certificate but not certified by a 3rd party, is not certified by default. This is the reason why visitors see such warnings so that they don’t get tricked in submitting personal information in wrong places, which could be used in harming the individual or business.

rDNS in VPS Hosting Services

rDNS or Reverse DNS is an important concept in computer networking. This is also known as reverse DNS resolution or reverse DNS lookup. It essentially is related to determining domain name associated with a certain IP address through the use of DNS or Domain Name System of the internet. It must be kept in mind this concept is an important one in setting services such as that in email. To make the concept precise, it must be said that without the availability of proper reverse DNS records, the email will fail to work properly. It must be kept in mind that reverse DNS entries don’t get created automatically at the time of setting up VPS hosting. The hosting service provider has to create it for the customer.

Though the involved steps vary from one service provider to another, the steps generally involved in setting the rDNS records include:

1.You have to login to the service provider provided Account Manager.

2.After login, it is important for navigating to the section named “Quick Server login”. Once there, you need to select the View Details tab so that correct configuration of rDNS can be selected for the preferred hosting service.

3.Now, the user has to select the tab saying something similar to managing rDNS. For configuring the rDNS, the underlined record needs to be selected.

4.In the final step, the entire setting needs to be saved by clicking the appropriate tab similar to that.

It must be kept in mind that the usual time take for DNS resolution is anything from 24 hours to 48 hours.

How can Site Migration for VPS Customers be accomplished?

When it comes to migration of site to VPS hosting, free service is available. Migration can be either from a different hosting service or upgradation of service to VPS server. In such processes, following the instructions provided by the trained technical experts of the VPS service provider is the best way. In case of a new customer of a certain service provider, requiring to transfer site from another hosting service provider, he/she has to login to Account manager of the service provider to which he intends transferring to. In these cases, the new customer of VPS hosting has to use Site Migration Request Form (if there is one like that one). These forms usually come with tabs that ask about control panel URL of the existing hosting provider along with the username as well as password. A user also has to provide detailed instruction of databases, files, and more. In fact, FTP credentials also need to be provided for retrieving the files.
